Trophies are awarded annually in the following categories:
Junior Bowhunter of the Year
Open to members 17 years of age
and under, for animals taken within the boundaries of Saskatchewan. This
annual award is presented to the member with the highest aggregate points
according to the club's point system in the current year. To be eligible
for this award, the member must be 17 years of age or under when the animal(s)
are taken.
Lady Bowhunter of the Year
Open to female members for animals
taken within the boundaries of Saskatchewan. This annual award is presented
to the member with the highest aggregate score according to the club's
point system within the current year.
Saskatchewan Bowhunter of the Year
This award is presented annually
to the member who obtains the highest aggregate score according to the
club's scoring system for animals meeting the Pope & Young requirements
during the current year. All animals listed must be listed as big game
animals recognized by the Pope & Young Club. These animals must be
taken within the boundaries of Saskatchewan and will only be accepted
after the annual membership fees have been paid. Only one animal of each
species will be accepted for this award.
This trophy was designed and built by Archie Lovelace and donated by
Alex Walters.
North American Bowhunter of the Year
The rules for this annual award
are the same as for the Saskatchewan Bowhunter of the Year with the exception
that all animals must be taken within the boundaries of North America
(including Saskatchewan). It is not necessary to take animals from outside
of Saskatchewan to win this award.
This trophy was designed and built by Archie Lovelace.
Largest Whitetail Deer
The trophy is awarded annually
to the member taking a whitetail deer, whether it be typical or non-typical,
which scores the most points over the Pope & Young minimum requirement,
which is 125 points for typical and 150 points for non-typical.In the
case of two deer (typical or non-typical) that both score below the minimum,
the one closed to the minimum would win.

Largest Mule Deer
This trophy is awarded annually
to the member taking the largest mule deer, whether it be typical or non-typical,
which scores the most points over the Pope & Young minimum requirements,
which is 145 points for typical and 160 points for non-typical. In the
case of two deer (typical or non-typical) that both score below the minimum,
the one closed to the minimum would win.

Largest Elk
This trophy is awarded annually
to the member taking the elk which scores the most Pope & Young points.
This trophy was built and donated by Tylor McGrath, Ken Bushman and
Murray Hanson of Watrous.
Largest Moose
This trophy is awarded annually
to the member taking the Canada Moose which scores the most Pope &
Young points.
The Kevin Misfeldt Memorial Trophy is named and presented in memory
of Kevin Misfeldt. Kevin was taken from us in 1997 while performing game
counts by aircraft for the Province of Saskatchewan. Kevin was a member
of Saskatchewan Bowhunters and an avid moose hunter.
The beautiful moose antler carving and base were built and donated
by Darrell Stupnikoff of Saskatoon.
Largest Black Bear
This trophy is awarded annually
to the member taking the highest scoring black bear.In case of a tie,
each winning member will get to keep the trophy for an equal portion
of the current year and all winners names will be engraved on the award.
In 1976, Fred Bear and friends spent a week hunting black bear in northern
Saskatchewan. At that time, Fred donated a sum of money to the Saskatchewan
Bowhunters Club. The executive of the day decided that, rather than use
the money for general purposes, it would be more appropriate to build a
trophy in Fred's name for members to compete for.
The trophy is copied after the Bear Archery logo. The trophy was designed
and built by Gary Thackray.
Largest Pronghorn Antelope
This trophy is awarded annually
to the member taking the highest scoring antelope. In the case of a tie,
each winning member will get to keep the trophy for an equal portion
of the current year.
This beautiful trophy was designed, built and donated by the late Adam
Deutscher of Regina.
Best of the year
Annual awards are presented for
each top scoring species recognized by Pope & Young as big game animals
taken in the current year.
New Record
This award is presented to the
member whose animal surpasses the previous club record.
First
This award is given to the member
who takes the first animal of a recognized species.
Citations
are presented to all members who
take animals that meet or surpass the Pope & Young minimum qualifications.
Photo Contest
Awards are given for best photo
in each of the following categories:
- Scenery
- Wildlife
- Hunting
Other awards bestowed upon special occasion
include:
- The Bill
Wadsworth Memorial Award is bestowed upon a member who has made
an outstanding contribution to archery and/or bowhunting in Saskatchewan
or to the Saskatchewan Bowhunters Association. The award is named in memory
of Bill Wadsworth, founder of the International Bowhunter Education Program,
who dedicated his life to the teaching of ethics, sportsmanship and conservation
in the sport of bowhunting. The award is not presented annually, but is
instead initiated by nomination and awarded on recommendation of the executive.
The award includes a certificate of merit, plaque and a life-time membership
in the Saskatchewan Bowhunters Association.
Past recipients include
- Al Hill - was awarded
the Bill Wadsworth Memorial Award in 1991, it's inaugural year. It
was presented in recognition of the selfless contributions that Al has made
for numerous years, not the least of which are his representation of the
bowhunters point of view when addressing matters on the Saskatchewan Wildlife
Federations' Presidents Council. Countless early victories for the
Sask. Pro-Bowhunters and SBA can be attributed to the dedicated and committed
negotiations in active defense of bowhunting and conservation issues in Saskatchewan.
- Bub Hill - Bub has been a long-time administrator of IBEP
/ NBEF in Saskatchewan, master instructor and long-time executive member
who has given willingly of his time to instruct innumerable courses in
bowhunter education. Bub could always be relied upon to instruct and
aid prospective bowhunters throughout the province. His efforts, time
and dedication have made Saskatchewan bowhunters safer, more knowledgeable
and more ethical in their pursuit of our sport.
- Archie Lovelace - Archie is a co-founder of "Sask. Pro
Bowhunters," the parent organization of Saskatchewan Bowhunters Association
and long-time Saskatchewan provincial archery coach. Archie has freely
given of his time and knowledge so that countless others can enjoy the
sport of archery and Bowhunting in Saskatchewan.
- Darrell Senebald - has been a long-time executive member,
past-president, a representative on numerous boards and steering committees
and is currently the editor of the annual awards yearbook. Darrell is
a former conservation officer, worked on behalf of the Saskatchewan Wildlife
Federation and currently operates a wilderness adventure booking
and consulting firm. He has displayed a dedication in his life to the
betterment of bowhunting and conservation in Saskatchewan. His contribution
to the Saskatchewan Bowhunters Association and to the wildlife of Saskatchewan
is immeasurable.
- The Saskatchewan
Super Slam Award is presented to each member bowhunter who, through
his/her bowhunting career harvests a specimen of each native big game species
which qualifies for entry into the Pope & Young Club record book.
This award is intended to recognize to outstanding knowledge and ability
of the bowhunter to harvest what is arguably the most elusive specimens
of each species.
- Ron
Bodnarchuk of Birch Hills Sask. is the only recipient of this
award to date. Ron has demonstrated his incredible skills throughout
the years. Ron has always maintained the utmost in ethical behavior and
represents a model of the skills, abilities and determination necessary
to attain excellence in the field.
